The CRPA Pistol Shooting Basic Course is an introductory handgun course designed to provide new and inexperienced shooters with a strong foundation in safe firearm handling, basic marksmanship, and responsible gun ownership. The course emphasizes safety above all else, while building confidence and competence with a pistol in a structured, supervised environment.
Students are introduced to fundamental shooting skills including proper grip, stance, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, and follow-through, as well as safe loading, unloading, and basic malfunction awareness. Instruction includes both classroom discussion and live-fire range exercises, where students apply these fundamentals under direct instructor supervision.A core component of the course is strict adherence to the “3 Always” firearm safety rules:1. Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction.2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.3. The CRPA Pistol Instructor Course Inside the Home, Outside the Home, and Pistol Instructor is a blended instructor-level training program consisting of three integrated courses delivered over two days, with a required online module to be completed prior to in-person training. This program is designed for experienced shooters seeking instructor certification in pistol fundamentals and defensive firearm use in both home and public environments.
The course provides in-depth instruction on firearm safety, instructional methodology, range management, legal considerations, and live-fire qualification standards, with specific emphasis on safe and lawful pistol use inside the home and outside the home. Successful completion of this CRPA instructor program meets the training prerequisite required to apply as a California Department of Justice (DOJ) Certified CCW Instructor, authorizing the graduate to teach DOJ-compliant CCW courses in the State of California, subject to agency approval.
